Realistic Expectations for Your Travel Budget

Having a realistic perspective on your travel budget is very important. While many like to think of themselves as "budget" travelers, most people are not prepared for the discomfort and lack of amenities that come with traveling on a shoestring budget. Consider what you really love about travel and thinkg about your previous travel experiences. Are you more inclined to stay in hostels, or do you prefer more comfortable hotels, resorts, or vacation rentals? Is dining out a priority for you? Do you want to visit the major sights and attractions? Your answers to these questions will shape your overall travel budget significantly.

What Does It Mean to Be a Budget Traveler?

Many travelers hear that exploring Slovakia can be done for $71 a day, but if you want to keep some comforts, expect to pay a lot more.

Backpackers might find a way to travel around on that tight budget, but that usually means dorm stays in hostels, eating at budget-friendly restaurants or fast food places, using public transport or walking, and focusing on free attractions.

Fortunately, Slovakia has a significant number of hostels, especially in Bratislava and Kosice. A variety of destinations have well-developed public transit systems that help budget travelers avoid expensive taxi or Uber rides.

Do You Identify as an Average Traveler?

Couples or families on vacation will probably choose mid-range hotels, popular dining spots, and visits to major museums and attractions that charge entry fees. Most visitors to Slovakia will want to visit the major attractions, sights, and landmarks. Since most activities have a cost, you should realisticly plan for your budget to be closer to $165 per person, per day.

Slovakia has tons of hotels and vacation rentals available. If you're traveling with a group or family, sharing accommodations with a partner, friend, or your family will cut back on the daily per-person budget. Popular family-friendly destinations like Bratislava offer hotels and restaurants that cater specifically to kids. For a family-friendly stay, consider Hotel Marathon in Senec or Hotel Zlaty Klucik in Nitra. If you're a couple visiting Tatranska Lomnica, consider staying at Hotel Lomnica for a romantic getaway. You can discover more family and couples options in our hotel guide for Slovakia here.

Seeking a Stylish Getaway from the Daily Routine?

Local Transportation Tips

Slovakia has an excellent train system that will connect you to almost everywhere in the country. The prices are reasonable and the rides are comfortable and fast. Long distance and regional buses can fill in when the rail lines don't reach your destination.

If saving money is a priority, public transit is your best bet for getting around. Numerous places boast reliable public transportation networks, including the extensive systems in Bratislava. Many visitors also enjoy discovering places by walking, which offers a chance to connect with different neighborhoods and immerse themselves in the local culture. Those who enjoy walking will find Bratislava particularly enjoyable.

When visiting larger cities such as Bratislava, it's wise to opt for a multi-day pass if you'll be using public transit frequently. Depending on your travel frequency, this could lead to significant savings over buying separate tickets.

If you're planning to visit the countryside, you'll likely want to rent a car. Remember that the typical vehicle in Europe will have a manual transmission, and if you want an automatic, the price will jump up. Remember to book well in advance as the cheaper options disappear quickly.

If you plan on driving in one of the bigger cities, be sure to check with your hotel about parking ahead of time. You may be required to pay for parking either at the hotel or in a nearby public garage. In some cases, parking further out of town could be cheaper.

Budgeting and Travel Tips

  • Slovakia is a hot spot for travelers, and as a result, prices can skyrocket when peak season rolls around. Typically, the biggest crowds flock to Slovakia during the summer months, and that's when hotels book up fast and accommodation costs shoot through the roof. If you're looking to save some cash, consider planning your trip during the shoulder or off-peak seasons when things are a bit quieter and easier on the wallet.

Budgeting Challenges

  • In Slovakia, hostels are few and far between, so if you're a backpacker looking for an affordable dorm bed, you might be caught off guard.
  • Slovakia has limited options for public transportation unless you're visiting places like Bratislava. You should plan to rent a car or have a prearranged form of transportation available, such as a tour. This may cut into your budget elsewhere.

Traveling in Slovakia
Slovakia Kosice, Slovakia

Slovakia is fully landlocked and located in Central Europe. It is a modern democratic country that belongs to the European Union. Most people travel to Slovakia for the natural beauty and interesting history. There are nine national parks in the country, which is an impressive number given its relatively small size. Much of Slovakia is made up of limestone so there are many impressive caves worth exploring. Skiing in the Carpathian Mountains is a popular activity as well.

If you're interested in history, Slovakia also has a good number of castles and chateaux. Some are basic ruins while others are still in good condition and are habitable. Slovakia's cities often have a gothic and baroque atmosphere that is interesting to experience.

Slovakia's geography is predominantly mountainous in the central and northern parts. The highest peak is Gerlachovsky stit, which rises to 2,655 meters in the High Tatras. Southern Slovakia has lowlands with very fertile soil and a lot of agriculture.

Slovakia's climate is temperate with hot summers and cold, snowy winters. There are four seasons with dramatic temperature variations. The southern part of the country is the warmest and less likely to get snow during the summer months. The mountainous north has a much colder climate and snow is quite common during winter months.

  • The train is a great option for traveling around Slovakia. The country is served by an excellent train system that connects most larger cities with frequent trips. Local trips can be a little more difficult to come by on trains, and a bus is likely your best option. Buses and trains are comparable in cost and very reasonable in price by western standards. Delays may occur so do not plan on close connections as you may miss your second train.

  • Slovak is the official language of Slovakia. It is also the most commonly spoken languag. Some of the older generation does speak Russian, and some of the younger generation may speak English. Outside of the tourist areas, you likely won't find many signs in English so it is worth learning a few phrases in Slovak. All efforts to speak the local language are much appreciated.
